I don't really celebrate new years. But gather with some good people in a one nice night isn't wrong either. The thing is that with dates months years is just merely a fictional measurements that men made to make them sure what they are doing, and we celebrates the time when we come to an end of one phase of the measurement. It doesn't really interest me somehow. No offense to those who celebrates New Years.
So, yeah. Speaking of which, there has been many things happened during 2011, obviously. Things with me, you, and the world while it spins. Now, we came to the end of it. And then we wonder what would happen in 2012. So, we start making resolutions! Yes! A fine beautiful resolution that we try to achieve in the coming year. It could be new, but I don't mind rewriting my 2011's resolution. Oh, wait I think it's 2010's resolution. Or maybe 2009's? Meh.
So what had happened during 2011? And how could it affect the space and time in 2012?
Speaking in the content of the global world, I'd say A LOT. A lot of things happened. One of many, so that we could pick some berries out of our forgetful brain, is those people who died. Let's say, the recent Kim Jong-il, Steve Jobs, Qadafi, or Osama bin Laden. These are some of the many people whose life and death affected the course of events/issues in our global society.
Others, like Occupy movements, economic crisis, and many more but I'm not gonna write about this. This time I want to rant about Indonesia
Now in Indonesia, as an Indonesian myself, of course many things that would be considered as a bad news happened during the days of 2011. The thing is that we have this kind of "amnesia" syndrome thingy as a nation. We tend to forget an issue (let's say for example a massive bank corruption) too fast.
Probably one of the reason is the government, if not the people who responsible for it, are really well prepared to handle it once their crime gets into the spotlight of media and the Indonesians. Somehow there's always a new issue came up right after, which mostly are the things that are not important such like gossips, or tabloid-consumption stories, and THAT, covers up the former issue.
Suddenly, we forget already about the corruption, human rights violations, and many other crimes by the same kind of suspects.
It's always been like that. And it works. Always.
Now, now. I wouldn't say it didn't work for me. I find it quite hard to recall many events and issues that happened in Indonesia.
So reflecting to that, let's see what issues that just recently happened there. Especially around December. Here are some of it:
Sondang: A student activist who burned himself to death in front of the Istana Merdeka (Merdeka Palace, the president's official residence).
A side: People takes it as a hopeless kid trying to kill himself to get attention. Others, think of it as such a low thing he did, due to religion says that suicide is such a selfish act, even a sin.
B side: The point is not what those who are in the A side thought. He did that, to move people to act more against the violations of the ruling class. B sides think that Sondang's act of self-immolation is supposed to be a trigger, an incentive, so that people would start to make more effort for a change, in Indonesia.
Aceh's "punk": The arrest of 60 more street 'punkers', where the sharia police arrest them, shave their head bold, put them into a river, and then put them into a religious "rehabilitation".
A side: those punks has been disturbing the local neighborhood. Their acts are also breaking the rules and customs of the local (dominant) religion.
B side: The police are violating human rights in how they treat the punks like animals. Others, protest if they really do disturb the society, then those upper class who corrupts the wealth of people should be also arrested, because they are one big disturbance for our people.
Mesuji, Lampung: the massacre of the local indigenous by a foreign corporation using the hands of the local policemen.
No A or B in this, I'd say. I mean, It's that classic exploitation by a foreign corporation to the land and people of Indigenous! You could see that anywhere right? No need for sides for this one, it's either you exploits or you're being exploited.
So what can we conclude from these sorts of events, my dear fellow earthlings?
I don't know why, but somehow this issues that happened during the last days of 2011, really summarized the condition and situation of Indonesia's problem. The same old corruption, prejudices among communities, human rights violations.
This shows how ignorant of us as a nation, keeping the same model of problem in our agenda.
These 3 concluding issues also shows that 2011 is merely a failed penetration, a failed inter-course. An anti-climax. A premature ejaculation! And 2012 would be just the continuation of it..
So many to fix, so many to learn, so many that we can't do.
Oh, and about "2012's world ends" paranoia? Meh, it's nothing compared to what makes me paranoid more, the "2012, the world didn't really end so it continues to 2013 with same stuff runs it" paranoia.
Oh, man. It's Fear all around us. To borrow from Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, it's going to be Fear and Loathing all over again.
Well it's going to be 2012 in a couple of hours. So, I wish you guys have a happy new year. Don't forget that no one knows when this ship is going to sink. Good luck!
